MERCADITO

Established in 2004 for on Avenue B, Mercadito was Darin Rubell’s first foray into restaurant ownership. New York City is often seen as a battleground between fast food tex-mex spots and typical Mexican fare, so a casual spot with a creative approach, spearheaded by chef Patricio Sandoval, was a welcome change. The minimally lit, wood-thatched detailing and clay walls recreated the ambience of a seaside cantina, with Latin music setting the tone.

The city’s favorite Mexican staples were served up with a unique twist, everything from tortas with rosemary-marinated skirt-steak, to chicken tinga flautas, corn masa quesadillas, plus hearty mains like adobo chicken. But most celebrated were the expertly and authentically executed tacos, a steal at $13 for four, like ancho rubbed al pastor pork with grilled pineapple or the “Estilo Baja” mahi-mahi pescado that New York Magazine named Best Fish Taco. The ceviches, including dorado with Asian pear and tamarind- chipotle broth, also displayed exceptional craftsmanship as did the traditional margaritas and micheladas.
